Father’s Commitment

A Father’s Commitment: Give your children to be blessed by God, above being blessed by the world.

Father’s Day; the one day a year specifically designed to honor our Dads. Some words that come to mind when describing a Father; protector, hardworking, provider, mentor, role model, guide, and unconditional love.

Unconditional love – affection without any limitations, a love without conditions; complete love. This is the very love that children long to receive from their Father. Unfortunately not every child receives this love. Sadly, there are Dads in this world who are unable to love in a way that children need. Fathers fallen captive to the sinful world around them. Addictions, abuse, abandonment. This is where children are so very fortunate to be able to turn to their heavenly Father to receive the gift of unconditional love and guidance, strength, and protection. When using the term children I am not merely speaking about a youngster. I am speaking to the wide range of young and old.

John 1:12 states, “But to all who believed Him and accepted Him, He gave the right to become children of God.”

My husband grew up without an earthly Father. He had no man in his life to teach him, guide him, or protect him. Statistics show that 63% of youth suicides are from fatherless homes. ( U.S. Dept of Health/Census), 90% of all homeless runaway children are from fatherless homes. 85% of all children who show behavior disorders come from fatherless homes. (Center for Disease Control) 80% of rapists with anger problems come from fatherless homes. (Justice & Behavior Vol. 14, p. 403-26) 75% of all adolescent patients in chemical abuse centers come from fatherless homes. -10 times the average.

Those are just a handful of the odds stacked against my husband. What saved him? What set him apart from falling victim to such harsh statistics? It was none other than his belief in our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, the Father to the fatherless. He is the one who models all of the characteristics He had in mind when creating fatherhood. Many of our earthly Fathers do not live up to the standard, but God promises us that through Him, no child has to grow up without a perfect Father. God will fill in all of the gaps, love those who need to be loved, value those who need to be valued, and protect and cherish those who need to be protected and cherished.

My husband attained so many wonderful attributes of a good father by following  and continually seeking such a perfect example of a father, though not an earthly father but his heavenly Father.

A few months ago our daughter, then finishing her senior year in High School, came to me and told me that she was pregnant. I asked her to leave the room and told her that I would come and speak with her in a few minutes. I needed a moment to take this news in and respond in a way that would glorify God and bless her heart and spirit which was clearly shaken and scared. I called my husband upstairs, shut the door behind him and proceeded to tell him the news. We spoke, we embraced taking in some deep breaths together, and opened the door and walked down the hall to her room where she lay on her bed softly crying. My husband took her hand in his, and there in a circle we gathered all in her pink zebra bedroom, hand in hand while he led us in prayer, praying over her and her unborn child. Reassuring her that everything was going to be okay and that she was not alone and, most importantly, she was loved unconditionally. This was a perfect demonstration of how he was taught not by an earthly father, how to be a father, but by his heavenly Father who he has sought after for most of his life.

Ephesians 3:16, ” I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his spirit. Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God. Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think. Glory to him in the church and in Christ Jesus  through all generations forever and ever! Amen.” ( NLT)

I pray this scripture today over all the Dads out there.

Lord Jesus, thank you for guiding men like my husband who so desperately needed a Father to teach them the way they should walk, the path in which leads to righteousness. I pray for those men young and old who are fatherless or in need of the greatest example of a father. One who will teach them about mercy and strength, compassion and unconditional love. May they find this example through you Lord, the perfect father, the father to the fatherless, the father to the broken. Thank you Lord for all the fathers in this world who seek after your heart and will. Bless them abundantly. And for those who don’t know you and your goodness, I pray for their souls, I pray for their hearts, may they come to know you Lord. Thank you Lord, we praise you for being a good, good father.
