He Can Make All Your Dreams Come True

Children are such an amazing gift from God.  Not only are they great for providing moments of joy and laughter, they also provide many moments of teaching.  If I had a nickel for every time I turned to my dad, who is a pastor, and said, “There’s a sermon in that,” I would probably be rich by now.

The other day I had such a moment with my 7-year-old son, Michael. We were sitting at McDonalds, of all places, eating our cheeseburgers, when Michael announced, “I told a kid at school all about God and now we are best friends forever.” Amazing, right? So I asked him the boy’s name and what he told him. Michael said that he told him that God can help you with your mind. Which God has recently helped Michael make a literal overnight change. Michael was diagnosed with ADHD, and things were getting pretty rough with melt-down fits and pure frustration on his and our part. After an unusually peaceful week, Michael announced that he asked God to help him change, and God did. I’m still overwhelmed with praise for this! We are still working to help him focus in school and such, but his attitude and overall demeanor have been forever changed. He also said that he told his new friend that if you follow Jesus with your heart, He will make all your dreams come true. At that moment, I smiled, slightly amused, yet agreed and told him how proud I was that he had the courage to speak to his friend.  Michael ran off to play and I was left to process our conversation.

A few days later, the magnitude of Michael’s simple, yet profound, statement really hit me. “If you follow Jesus with your heart, He will make all your dreams come true.”  I believe there is so much truth to this, and God had something to say to me.

If we, as earthly parents, have dreams and desires for our children, just think how much more our Abba Father in heaven, who knit us together in our mother’s womb, has dreams and desires for us. And His are perfectly suited for us because He alone has perfect vision of the past, present, and future. He has dreams for us that we haven’t even discovered yet! Psalm 37:5-7 says that if we delight ourselves in the Lord, He will give us the desires of our hearts. What are the desires of your heart? Your dreams. Your wants.  But it doesn’t stop there. These verses also say that we need to trust in the Lord, do good, and commit our ways, then he will do this. And don’t forget to DELIGHT in Him. How do we delight in God? We take joy in Him. We trust him. We have faith in Him. We talk to him and continue to commune with Him. When we begin to do all these things, when we begin to truly seek Him, we begin to trade our earthly dreams for His perfect dreams; our earthly will for His perfect will.

We also have another amazing promise. In Philippians 1:6, it says that we can be confident that he who has begun a good work in us will carry it to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. Meaning He doesn’t quit! His dreams for my life and yours do not run out! Thank you Jesus! God continues to have a plan for you until the day that Jesus returns.  We can be confident in this. We can TRUST in this that He has promised. I know that I take joy in knowing that my God will never toss me aside because I have outlived my day, completed a single task, or even if I screwed up. What an amazing God we serve!

I challenge you today to begin to truly delight in our Lord. Seek Him with all your heart. Trust in Him and have faith that he will keep His promises.  Allow Him to fill you from the top of your head to the tips of your toes with His Spirit. Ask the Holy Spirit to walk with you every day, and watch as your Father’s dreams and desires become your dreams and desires. As you talk to and commune with Him, remember that last part of Psalm 37:7. “Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him.” Trust that he will show you His plan when the time is right.

So, I finish this with great news sisters. “Follow Jesus with your heart, and He will make all your dreams come true.”

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you,” declares the Lord.  Jeremiah 29:11-14a
