A Call to Nana’s (Grandmothers)

I am blessed to have 11 beautiful grandbabies, I found this picture, wish I had one with all of them. But my sweet grandchildren I love you all with the deepest part of my soul. Saying that as I was reading scripture this morning, studying for a mid-week Bible study I read these verses.

“Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, in keeping with the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus, to Timothy, my dear son: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.. I thank God, whom I serve, as my ancestors did, with a clear conscience, as night and day I constantly remember you in my prayers. Recalling your tears, I long to see you, so that I may be filled with joy. I am reminded of your sincere faith, which fist lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.” 1 Timothy 1:1-5

My children did not get the privilege of knowing, personally, my grandmother Mills. She was a strong woman, which carried much on her heart. She had 13 children and 11 survived to adulthood. She carried the godly torch in the family, as my grandfather did not come to know the Lord until very late in life. I know she prayed for us all and lived a life of faith in front of us. Then that faith in her was presented to and lived out by my mother, my children’s grandma, Dorothy Andersen-Jantz.

I want to talk to women my age for a moment here. Because of my ancestors that believed and obeyed God, that torch has been passed down from generation to generation. The strong belief system often was founded to be present in the elder’s lives and especially in the elder women’s lives.

We need to take this torch of faith very seriously. I am so blessed that through my grandmother’s prayers that all of my parent’s children turned their lives to God. My dear sister is with Jesus today because of a praying grandmother and praying mother.

Ladies, we are the ones that nurture the children and they MUST see Jesus in us. As Paul wrote these words to a man he loved so much as if he were his very own son, he was reminded of Timothy’s sincere faith and that faith was there because of a grandmother (Lois) and she taught her daughter the same faith that (Eunice) displayed to her son Timothy. And then Timothy trusted in and believed and served God, see how it was passed down.

I am blessed that all of my children are serving the Lord today. But, this wasn’t just because I nurtured and prayed for them. It probably started even before my grandma Mills. But, because of the life my grandma lived out, we are here serving Jesus today.

Now for the young mother’s that are raising your children. They may be young, but believe me the years will fly by so very fast. Then, you will be like me, a 59-year-old woman that is a Nana to grandchildren. They need to see Jesus in us each and every day.

We will make mistakes along the way, but if you prayerfully start each day and live under the blood of Jesus, your children will not turn from the faith you have taught them. God promised this in Proverbs 22:6, “Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.” That is a promise to us for our children.

Lord, I pray for all the Nana’s and someday Nana’s that are reading this right now. I pray that You will give them a love for their children and grandchildren that will drive them to their knees for each and every one of them daily. We stand on Your promises that our children will not depart from You, we thank You for this promise. Amen

Glennette Christian

Glennette Christian, the mother to three grown children, knows that God has had a constant leading in her life. He has taken her to many places throughout the United States in ministry and currently has been led to Tarkio, Missouri with her husband, Michael. While also raising her family, Glennette and Mike took in several other children along the way that needed a loving reminder of what it meant to have a caring parent present in their lives. She is the grandmother to eleven beautiful children and loves every minute she gets with them. Philippians 4:13, “I can do everything through him who gives me strength.” (NIV)
